FRONT STREET

Every New Year’s, we run W. J. Britton’s poem, “Front Street.” Mr. Britton was known as “the poet of Front Street,” as he was both a merchant and writer poet. Britton was eclectic and had an “artsy” side, but was also known to have a big heart. He was one of dozens of characters on Front Street, which was the Center of the Universe for the cotton world. Front Street was a magical place, a beehive of activity, and was the largest physical cotton market in the world. Today it is a shadow of what it once was, with lawyers and ad firms occupying the Cotton Exchange offices. All three of the Varner boys had some time on Front Street, as boys growing up with a father that visited there often, and later as we entered the cotton business.
