FRONT STREET

Every New Year’s, we run W. J. Britton’s poem, “Front Street.” Mr. Britton was known as “the poet of Front Street,” as he was both a merchant and writer poet. Britton was eclectic and had an “artsy” side, but was also known to have a big heart. He was one of dozens of characters on Front Street, which was the Center of the Universe for the cotton world. Front Street was a magical place, a beehive of activity, and was the largest physical cotton market in the world. Today it is a shadow of what it once was, with lawyers and ad firms occupying the Cotton Exchange offices.
